MAY — Leave No Trace Is About Respect, Not Perfection

Leave No Trace can feel intimidating. Like you have to do everything perfectly or you don’t belong outside. I don’t believe that.

To me, Leave No Trace is about respect. Respect for the land. Respect for wildlife. Respect for the next person who comes along—and for the people working behind the scenes to keep places open.

None of us start out knowing everything. We learn by doing, by asking questions, and sometimes by making mistakes. What matters is the willingness to do better once we know more.

At MWRA, we focus on progress over perfection. Staying on designated routes. Packing out trash—even when it isn’t yours. Giving wildlife space. Making decisions that prioritize long-term health over short-term convenience.

Leave No Trace isn’t about shame or judgment. It’s about awareness. And when education is shared with empathy instead of blame, people listen.

The outdoors should feel welcoming. Stewardship is how we keep it that way—for everyone.
